I didn't want to like it but everyone did such a great job. And I got a new character to like too.

I talked to so many people to day that were so heartbroken it was awful. A lot were saying they didn't know if they would keep watching. They said the killings were just to brutal and over the top. That would have been the main thing I would have changed too.

I didn't rate the episode in the poll because my feelings about the acting differ drastically from my feelings about the episode.

I give AL a 10 for his performance. I still can't believe some people accuse him of overacting. I think he's a fearless actor.

I give CR a 9. I've always liked Carl/CR, but it wasn't until the s6 finale, when he looked Negan in the eyes, that I became excited to see a future story line for him. His moment with Negan in the s7 premiere was equally compelling to me. (In a way, he's like Father Gabriel for me. Only, I hated Father Gabriel until the end of s6 and now I want to see more of him. FG and Carl are probably the two characters I'm most excited about seeing this season besides Rick and Michonne.)

I give DG, MC, LC, SY and SMG 8s.

JDM gets a 6. I posted a little in another thread why I think he has been miscast (maybe in The Walking Dead Confessions thread), but I just rewatched the episode (fast forwarded a lot of it though) and JDM's scene with CR is pretty good. JDM absolutely conveys a, dare I say, fear when Negan looks at Carl. Carl's coldness seems to bother Negan and make him lose his cocky smile and look a bit concerned. For Carl. Like an adult thinking, This kid has issues and needs a Big Brother. I was impressed by the way JDM's facial expression changes when he interacts with Carl. (One of the reasons I mention for believing JDM is miscast is his facial expressions, ironically!)

The episode, however, didn't work for me. Personally, I despise flashbacks in movies and TV episodes. Unless they are handled with perfection, I think flashbacks hinder the flow of a story. I felt it was a mistake to show the deaths in a flashback. Which also brings me to the s6 finale cliffhanger. I believe Negan's introduction to the group would have worked much better if it had happened uninterrupted. It is rarely a good idea to interrupt powerful, emotional moments and the LV lineup scene was never allowed to flow naturally from the s6 finale through the s7 premiere.

My argument against the s6 finale had been that the cliffhanger took away the viewers ability to mourn with TF over the hiatus. The focus became "Who died?" instead of "I just want to be with Rick and the family as they mourn Abe and Glenn". And in the s7 premiere, I feel as if we weren't able to fully commiserate with Rick's RV journey because we still didn't know what he had witnessed. For me, the journey with the characters I love is more important than prolonging my anxiety about a scene I know is coming. I think the episode should have opened with the murders of Glenn and Abe. If you weren't spoiled, Glenn's death would have been a true shock. And Rick being dragged into that RV would have had a different impact on us because we would have been processing their deaths with him.

There were some really great things about the episode, but the first half didn't flow that well for me. I probably would have left out Rick's imagining of everyone having their heads bashed but I think they did that because they needed Rick to get angry enough to fight off the walkers. To be honest, I would have liked the dinner scene to be a little longer because that was lovely to me. But as I stated in my favorite scene post, I'm pleased Gimple and Nicotero gave us the family working together at the end.

For now, I don't have a rating for the episode.

This episode, especially the last 5-10 minutes, makes me think about this song called "Cranes in the Sky"--Solange.

I gave this episode a 9, because the acting was great. The actors took me on a journey through their characters' emotions and mental states. Especially, during the deaths.

My only negative comment will be that the deaths were gruesome.

Well it's time for me to let this episode go. I need to go back to the Richonne positivity thread or the DG Appreciation thread before I lose my ish. I'm desperately sad to have lost Glenn. He deserved better and I will always stand by that. Here's a vid to sum up my feelings. Until next week: Peace

Welcome to the dark side LOL. Daryl has been on my hate list for years due to the favoritism of the character. After 701 I despise Daryl.

    Sorry for the double post.

    I give 7x1 a 3 for several reasons.

    1. I hated seeing Rick suffer the mental and physical torture from Negan. Rick has done nothing to deserve such torture. I know that tptb have said that this is about tearing Rick down which will lead to building him up again in 7b. But, in my opinion it was too much torture and it felt like misery porn.

    2. Glenn's death was such a slap in the face to Steven. Glenn was one of TWD's original characters , and he deserved better than to have a shock death that will end up being all about Daryl and his pain. Silly Beth got an exit storyline and Tyrese's death bottle episode was one of TWD's best episodes, but Glenn's death is nothing more than an afterthought in Daryl's next big arc.:rant:

    3. Abe's death was grisly and disgusting. We should have seen Abe die in the finale, because he was featured heavily in that episode and had they shown Negan killing Abe in the finale it would have had more of an impact on the audience. Showing Abe being Lucilled in the premier seems to be for nothing but shock.

    4. Negan is an over the top jackass. I hate him with the heat of a million suns and I want him gone. I also hate myself for finding JDM attractive.

    5. Negan's taunting of Rosita felt forced and was only inserted for Daryl to play hero.

    6. Daryl's foolish actions.

I gave it a 7, heartbreaking as the episode was for me. The things i loved about the episode: As always andrew lincoln was superb, i liked the tender interactions b/t TF when they were removing the fallen, and i liked that sasha and rosita could be civil and comfort one another when it's most needed. I also appreciate that maggie's reaction wasn't to blame her family members, but instead she's urging them to prepare to fight.

I did not like: negan taunting/fake consoling maggie while glenn is suffering after the initial blow, i didn't like that the writers chose to overshadow abe's death by immediately killing glenn (the heart of the show to many ppl including myself), and i didn't appreciate that the writers are so determined to shove daryl down our throats. I can't get into everything that bothers me about this whole setup, or i'd be typing a book...but really? Am i the only one who noticed that they had maggie being MORE audibly distressed over daryl being taken away than she was her husband being beaten to death? I believe that was purposely done.

I Saw the thing with Maggie too. It made no sense to me why Maggie was shown as having a stronger reaction to Daryl 's kidnapping than her husband's brutal murder that just took place right in front of her. At first I thought that it was an editing mistake, now I believe that it was done on purpose to let the GA know that Daryl is the most important character on TWD even though he adds nothing to the show.

I think the deaths were brutal but I was happy about that. People have complained so much about AMC being soft and coping out on things that need to be seen so I was shocked they went there with this. The brutality of it just makes me hate Negan that much more and love TF even more which is the point of this episode. I think that if AMC didn't show the deaths so graphically people would complain about that. I was also shocked at the language they let pass. Negan said a few things to me that were racy and I was glad for it. Maybe AMC is stepping up. (I just need to see a really hot Richonne scene and I will be good)
I just heard on the radio that fans are planning to not watch anymore (sure!) because of who and how he died. People who were unspoiled were shocked. I was not, unfortunately, so I get their pain. I was talking to a few coworkers about it during the summer and they are not associated with any forums or anything. They kept saying Maggie would die or Abe only. They were so clueless I almost felt sorry for them.
This kind of talk and hype just makes the show even more popular. They will be gaining more new fans because people will be so curious as to what is going on with this show to cause this kind of crazy hype.
Personally, I have watched the ep two times already and going to torture myself again with it tonight because although brutal, the acting was fantastic and I need to see TF again.

Before the premier I learned that one of my coworkers watched the show and on Monday we were talking about the episode. He was unspoiled and is G.A., he had a big grin in his face while expressing that even though it was so brutal he was excited about this season and that last season they lost too much time in drama (he said it felt like a soap opera). Today my boss told me she watched the show yesterday after overhearing us and she told me "No comments.. what the he'll was that?" and gave me thumbs up smiling.

Well idk... The GA doesn't behave like the fandom, which is interesting :sadmaggie:

10/10. Loved it. I mean, in this gut-wrenching way that makes me want to die. Everyone turned in an amazing performance, though of course AL's portrayal of shell-shocked and broken Rick was astounding. He truly knocked it out of the park. I don't think it was torture porn. Negan took matters a step at a time, only upping the punishment as Rick and TF kept fighting back, whether it was Daryl's outburst or Rick's surly attitude. Negan did what he "had" to do to break Rick.

This has reminded me. AL was trending on UK twitter last night after the showing of the episode here. Admittedly I didn't read all the tweets but the few I did see were not complimentary about his acting.

Just talked to my mother. She watched 7.01 yesterday, well most of it (she sleeps easily after 10PM) and she said the premier was overdramatic in her opinion. Too much sobbing, too much tears, too much suffering... And in my mind I was ":tara: :tara: :tara: :tara: ????". Two members of their family just got murdered in the front of their eyes in a gruesome way and you think they were crying too much????? :hot::hot: :hot: :hot:.... She didn't even reach the part where Negan tells Rick to cut Carl's arm yet :sasha: I just laughed and said it's better if she binge-watch by the end of the season.

Now about the "AL exaggerated"... Dafuq??? AL is a father, he can easily put himself in Rick's shoes and know how it should feel to be threatened to witness all his family be killed if he didn't maim his son. :ogg: :ogg: Sometimes I think people just don't want to see a man cry aloud and show he's feeling weak and powerless in the face of despair.
