So, there's been some chatter about the significance of the dinner scene in 7.01 -- the one Rick imagines of how life would've been without Negan.

There's been chatter if this has any significance.

My thought is it's a chess analogy.

@MamaGrimes found a quote from Greg Nicotero that says Gimple is an accomplished chess player:

[Season 4] has been like a chess game, and I think the most exciting part is, an accomplished chess player like [showrunner] Scott Gimple knows where all the pieces need to be at a certain point during the game, and how we get them there

And I believe this plays into a lot of the things he does. This scene included.

    This is the seating arrangement

    -------------- Glenn -------------
    Maggie -------------- Abe
    Spencer ------------- Sasha
    Eugene -------------- Morgan
    Aaron ---------------- Rosita
    Enid ------------------ Tara
Carl & Judith ------- (idk it's not even)
    Carol ---------------- Daryl
    Gabriel -------------- Michonne
    ------------ Rick -----------------

Looking at it like a chessboard... this makes Rick the "Black King" as his Queen is to his right-side, not his left (as it would be on the white side of the board). This fits, given Rick is on "defense" (black makes the second move in a game).

Rick: King (Black on white square)
Michonne: Queen (Black on black square)
Daryl: Bishop (Black on white square)
Gabriel: Bishop (Black on black square)
Carol: Knight (Black on white square)
Tara: Knight (Black on black square)
Carl: Rook (Black on black square)
Rosita: Rook (Black on white square)

Now, the other side of the table can either be seen as pawns -- or perhaps the other side of the board (so then the roles would be mirrored). I am inclined to think maybe pawns as I don't see the table being a mirror. Also, there are 8 living people left on the other side: Judith, Enid, Morgan, Eugene, Aaron, Sasha, Spencer, and Maggie.

Of note: pawns are not useless or invaluable. Pawns are a key part of any chess game. As a general rule, a bishop or knight is worth the value of about two pawns. Pawns are also the only pieces that can become any other piece on the board. Once a pawn crosses into enemy territory, they can transform (usually into a Queen or Rook as those are the most valuable and powerful pieces in the game).

... I will come back later with more thoughts.

Carol and Tara being knights is intriguing because there's an old adage about how Knights are useless on the edge of the board: a knight on the rim is grim.

Starting off, both Rick's knights are "on the rim" -- away from home. Knights are at their most valuable and deadly in the center of action.

Carl being a King-side Rook is interesting because of "castling" -- a defensive move where the Rook swaps places with the King to afford the King more protection and get the Rook into the center of the board for action. This could represent Carl stepping into Rick's spot by taking offensive action against the Saviors.

In some countries, bishops are called "runners", "messengers", and even "archers" (in Scandanavia), which could be why Daryl fits this role.

Maggie being reduced to a pawn fits given she's sick and most likely going to be playing possum. Once she's ready to engage, she will transform into a more powerful piece -- a Queen.

What I have notice is that there are actually TWO tables with two different table settings. Unfortunately the end table with Glenn and Abe don't have the 3rd under plate and the top plates have a flower pattern.

Also, could it be said that Morgan "snuffs" out one of the lights... Does he kill someone at the table?

@Tater made a good point about Daryl being the Black Bishop on the white square -- it means he has a direct line of attack to the White King (Negan), which fits given his arc this season.

@Doctor Grimes, can I be you one day? I'm glad there are people like you in the fandom to pick up on stuff like this and us to appreciate it. Gimple is smarter than he gets credit for I believe and I hate to think his thoughtfulness is lost on most the audience.

Rosita as a rook. Does she work with Carl to trap Negan? Usually that's what rooks do. They work in tandem.

Not sure if she's working with Carl or not, but I do think Rosita and Carl both go at Negan hard this season -- which is the Rook's M.O.

Wasn't the joke that Gimple treats these characters like chess pieces? Guess we weren't wrong. :omg:

The blanket in the background is checkered red/white -- like a chessboard.

Is Perv wine... like drinking the Kool aid?

Perhaps this just means a perverted distortion of reality.

    According to Wikipedia:

The queen (♕,♛) is the strongest piece in the game of chess, able to move any number of squares vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Each player starts the game with one queen, placed in the middle of the first rank next to the king. Because of the value of a queen, it is sometimes used as bait to lure an opponent into a trap by a queen sacrifice. Another tactic is to use the queen to threaten the opponent's queen, to either retreat or to exchange the queen (losing both of them) to reduce the game to less strong pieces. The queen is often used in conjunction with another piece, such as teamed with a bishop or rook, where the pieces could guard each other while threatening the opponent pieces.

    This piqued my interest because
don't we suspect that Rick will be placed in a position of thinking that Michonne is either dead or in peril....ie tower scene remix.

Not necessarily a trap, but making Rick vulnerable again. "checkmate"

Just as Negan said he needs a right-hand man to do a lot of the heavy lifting, the queen does a lot of the heavy-lifting in the game. She's a powerful piece that does much of the work.

Once Rick rises up and gets in the game, it'll be his queen, Michonne, against Negan's "queen", Ogg. But queen versus queen is a difficult and dangerous game to play. It's better in chess to use your queen to take out your opponent's pieces of lesser value and try to capture their queen with your own lesser-value pieces.
